PHENOL-LIQUID

#1 PROCESS

Use of liquid Phenol.

#2 HAZARDOUS CHEMICALS/CLASS OF HAZARDOUS CHEMICALS

Poison, combustible and toxic via ingestion, inhalation and skin absorption.

#3 PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

This chemical is easily absorbed through skin, fatalities have been documented from skin absorption of a relatively small surface area. Use double gloves, Viton(R), rubber or neoprene. Safety glasses, goggles and face shield should be worn. Laboratory coats should be worn when handling this chemical. If body splash potential exists, wear a rubber or neoprene apron.

#4 ENGINEERING/VENTILATION CONTROLS

This chemical is easily absorbed through skin. Avoid skin contact. Large quantities must be used in fume hood. Use splash shielding if phenol use is in a pressurized system or if splash or spray is possible.

#5 SPECIAL HANDLING PROCEDURES AND STORAGE REQUIREMENTS

This chemical is easily absorbed through skin. If airborne exposure is suspected to approach the Threshold Limit Value (5 ppm) contact UCSD-EHS x42823 for proper worksite procedure evaluation.

Store away from oxidizers such as chlorine, bromine and calcium hypochlorite.

#6 SPILL AND ACCIDENT PROCEDURES

Incidental spill: Do not attempt cleanup if you feel unsure of your ability to do so or if you percieve the risk to be greater than normal laboratory operations. Use vermiculite or commercially available spill absorbent material to pickup spill. Place in labeled waste container ready for disposal. Flood area with water then cover with caustic soda ash to neutralize the residual material.

Large spill: Evacuate area, close and post doors to spill area. Call UCSD-EHS x42823 or after hours (9-1-1) (534-HELP) for spill response. Restrict persons from area of spill or leak unit clean-up is complete. Remain in area in safe location to assist EHS with response.

If splash occurs on skin, begin flooding with copious quantities of water and GET MEDICAL ATTENTION.

#7 WASTE DISPOSAL

Dispose of waste through UCSE-EHS

#8 SPECIAL APPROVAL REQUIRED

Recommended.

#9 DECONTAMINATION

#10 DESIGNATED AREA

Recommended

.

#11 LABELING

Whenever PHENOL  is mixed and stored outside its original container, it must be clearly marked with its concentration and a description of its hazards.
