Prevention
of Eye Injury
Please
Note: It is now laboratory safety policy that eye protection be worn at all
times while in the laboratory.
One of the most frequent injuries
incurred on the job is injury to the eyes. Many eye injuries are reported at
UCSD each year. It is important that everyone in our lab follow the basic rules
for protecting their eyes and vision while at work:
· Always wear the appropriate eye protection when performing
any procedure that may result in splashes, or the release of gases, or
particles that cause injury to the eye. (info on types of
safety glasses and goggles, face shields, etc.)
· Do NOT wear contact lenses while
working in the lab. Particles or caustic chemicals can become trapped under the
lens, causing physical damage or chemical burn to the cornea. The gas permeable
type contact lens can likewise absorb vapors which interact with eye lens moisture
to cause a burn.
· For most work in our lab, goggles are the best means of eye
protection since they form a seal around the eye area that will not easily
admit chemicals from a splash.
· Use the polycarbonate glasses for impact protection, such
as may occur when breaking up dry ice.
· Know the location of the eye wash station (immediately outside of room 332)
· In case of injury, follow the procedures for emergency
eye care.
Thank you.
