Guidelines for Safe handling of Hazardous Waste in your lab space:
1.) Designate a specific area for storage of your hazardous waste:
· Post a sign to identify your waste storage area: “Danger, Hazardous Waste”.
· Area should be near the work area where waste is generated.
· Area must be “under the control of the waste generator”.
· Do NOT use fume hoods for waste storage.
2.) Containers for liquid waste:
· Must be (chemically and size) compatible with their contents.
· Use screw cap type containers (no rubber stoppers, parafilm etc.)
· Secondary containers must be used (use a size at least 110% of waste container)
· Deface or remove old labels from containers used for waste.
· Affix a fully filled-out waste tag before adding waste.
· Keep Chemically Incompatible wastes segregated
® Oxidizers / Flammables
® Acids / Bases
® Halogenated Solvents / Non-Halogenated Solvents.
® Solvents / Metals (Very important!)
® etc.
· Keep containers closed at all times (except when adding waste)
· Wipe containers to clean of all exterior contamination before disposal.
3.) Dry waste:
· Use clear “poly” bags (UCSD Storehouse #5015) for all dry waste.
· Seal first bag, then use a second bag.
· Contaminated sharps should be placed into a puncture-proof container.
4.) Waste Tag Information (ex):
Required:
a.) Waste Generator Number (Masliah, 853)
b.) Contact Name
c.) Building and Room Number.
d.) Hazardous classification (Toxic, Flammable etc.)
e.) Date Started (date when waste was first added)
f.) Chemical Name and Percentage of total ( NO abbreviations, include water)
g.) ‘pH or N/A if not applicable
h.) Other hazard info, such as any disinfection methods used.
5.) Limits on Amounts and Type of Waste
· Accumulate for no more than 90 days (for most wastes); 55 gallons maximum.
· “Extremely Hazardous” materials must be disposed of in 3 days; 1 quart maximum.
