Immediate Protocol for Exposure to Human Blood / Body Fluids
Prompt evaluation is Important if a person has been exposed (by needle stick, splash or direct contact) to human blood, body fluids, or a laboratory-associated exposure: HIV infected cultures, tissue specimens, or fluids.
First: Wash wound (or contaminated skin area) with soap and water.
Then: Seek Advice (treatment may also be included.)
Normal Work Days:

Call the Medical Center Paging Operator 619 534-6737 and ask them to page 1447 STAY ON THE PHONE*

After Hours OR 

If paging does not work: Proceed directly to Thornton Hospital Emergency Department. **

* You will receive over-the-phone evaluation and counseling by a health-care provider. Depending on the risk assessment, you may be advised to proceed to Thornton Hospital Emergency Department.
** Risk assessment may be conducted at Thornton Hospital or you may then receive over-the-phone evaluation and counseling by a UCSD Center for Occupational and Environmental heath-care provider who is experienced and skilled in evaluating exposures. You may be advised to receive prophylactic treatment at Thornton Emergency Department.
